The story behind these white horses is one of romance and good fortune. The morning was blessed with a thick, low-lying mist, adding to the enchantment of the moment as well as the flightiness of the horses. Silence was broken by thundering hooves as the flighty herd rumbled past. The less-than-romantic reality was a bite of marsh-midges and muddy feet. Those all-but forgotten, these images now symbolise everlasting romance as they provided the opportunity for husband and wife to meet and forge a friendship.
Using the photogravure etching processes, images are transformed into intaglio prints using traditional inks and papers. These etchings are each editions of 25. Only a few editions now remain.

Certificates of Authenticity accompany all editioned prints. Editions purchased online will include a digitally-signed Certificate.
Large format print orders must be placed direct and are produced on a bespoke service due to their scale. Certificates are hand-signed and dated on the front by Astrid and on a label on verso. These prints are preferably sold framed and crated and couriered (within UK) or for international orders, ideally shipped direct to your framer in a tube.

Since Astrid's photographic career began in 2005 when working on a shipwreck salvage in Mozambique, Astrid has worked with Nikon gear. All images on this site were shot with Nikon cameras and lenses, including D4s, D700 and D800 bodies with 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8 and 105mm f2.8 Macro lenses.
Astrid uses a variety of different print solutions and carefully selects the finest paper and print type combination to suit each image. All materials are of professional, archival quality and Astrid works closely with suppliers in the UK and USA to produce her work to utmost standards.
Pigment ink prints are produced on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, German Etching or Canson Baryta papers. Some prints are produced as silver based digital C-type prints. These are real photographic prints, created on light sensitive paper using a finely balanced red, green and blue light source. This creates an analogue style print from a digital file with unparalleled tones.
Giclée and C-type Prints
What is a giclée print?
The French word “giclée” is a feminine noun that means a spray or a spurt of liquid. The word may have been derived from the French verb “gicler” meaning “to squirt”. Giclée prints are made using the latest professional inkjets, using papers that are hand-picked from professional ranges to give maximum choice and quality to the final print.
What is a C-type?
In a nutshell, silver based C-type prints are real photographic prints, created on light sensitive professional photographic paper using a finely balanced red, green and blue light source.
Can you tell me a bit more about C-types?
Remember the time when digital cameras didn’t exist and you had all your photos developed on light sensitive paper from a negative? That is exactly the technology Chromira printers are using, but in a highly advanced way. Photographic c-type prints are obtained through the exposure of a special type of paper to intensive lights of different colour – red, green and blue.
What is the difference between C-type prints and Giclée prints?
Chromira printers can reproduce over 16 million colours per square inch while giclee prints’ maximum amount of colours is only 256. The difference in maximum amount of colours is significant and is always taken into consideration depending on the type of image that is being printed.
What is the life expectancy of the prints?
When exposed to daylight, with both C-type and giclée printing, the minimum life expectancy is around 40 years. If kept away from direct sunlight or protected from the exposure to UV radiation, giclée prints can survive up to 200 years (in comparison with C-type prints that have the life expectancy of about 80 years). These figures are estimates based on accelerated light tests, as neither of the printers have been around for long enough to fully prove this.
How durable are the prints?
C-type prints tend to be more resistant to physical damage. The surface of giclee prints is considered rather sensitive and can easily get scratched, hence special care while handling them is vital. Ideally, all giclee prints should be laminated or protected behind a glass layer in order to prevent any damage to the surface.
What do you mean by a Photo-Etching?
We etch a photographic image into a printing plate, apply ink and print by hand on top quality papers. The process is technically known as photogravure. Gravure was developed in the 1850’s and was the premier method of printing photographic images, as it remains today when practiced with care and skill.
What does a photo-etching look like?
To print an etching the plate is pressed into the paper by running through a hand operated etching press. This pushes the plate into the paper leaving a very distinctive plate mark around the image, at the same time the ink on the plate transfers to the paper. So you can see and feel both the plate mark and the ink on the paper.
What makes a photo-etching so special?
The method combines the image, inks and papers in a unique way, producing a result, which is completely different from normal photographic prints. The print appears more human and has a much greater connection with the viewer.

Many editions are sold on an incremental basis, so the prices increase as the prints sell out, therefore prices are subject to change, without prior notification on the website.
Payment PayPal and Credit Cards are accepted through this website, but other methods of payment can be arranged – please discuss your preferred method of payment at the time of ordering. GBP, USD, EUR and other currencies can be accepted.
Each print is made to order and as such, standard delivery times may be extended slightly.
Prints are mailed via land or airmail depending on your country of residence.
Prints are mailed using mail tubes for ultimate protection of the print. Small prints may be mailed using flat mailers with protective inserts.
Each print is vetted and sent off in pristine condition. Any damage would be caused in transit. As such, we recommend you instantly contact your delivery company and us in order to advise all parties of any damage. Damaged goods are very isolated cases.
Please take the utmost care when removing your print from the tube and handle your print with care.

Delivery times Delivery times may vary but prints ordered online expect to be dispatched within 2 working days of the order being placed. Bespoke orders of signed prints will be dispatched within 7 working days. UK delivery can be expected within 10 working days. Overseas delivery times will vary but you will be notified when your print is ready for dispatch, and all relevant shipping references supplied for ease of tracking, where applicable. Please allow up to 28 days for delivery of framed prints, longer for etchings which may have to be printed and can take up to 8 weeks. Should you require your item sooner, please contact Astrid at the above address and for an additional fee, your order can be fast-tracked. Turnaround times will depend on the contents of your order.
Delivery charges All delivery within Mainland UK is included for print orders of £2000 and over. All other shipments might be subject to additional shipping fees. Delivery charges will be advised prior to shipping and invoiced accordingly. Please enquire if you wish to find out costs or discuss collection.
Taxes & custom fees The buyer is responsible for all taxes and custom fees which may apply.
Returns If you are not sufficiently happy with your product, you may return it, but please confirm this is what you intend to do within 48 hours of receipt. Providing these terms are met, a full refund will be given, although you will be responsible for shipping costs. Original shipping costs cannot be refunded.
